Success Story: Overcoming Deaths of Despair in Rural Communities

May 24, 2023
The following resource was adapted from a poster session created in collaboration with PRC and presented at the 2023 AHA Rural Health Care Leadership Conference.

The Wallowa County Health Care District was formed in 1992 and is the governing body of Wallowa Memorial Hospital and Medical Clinic and Wallowa Valley Senior Living, a residential care facility offering assisted living and memory care. With an elected five-member board, the District meets monthly with hospital administration and the management team of WVSL. In 2022, the District partnered with PRC to administer a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), with its data revealing alarming mental health findings impacting the population of Wallowa County. With these insights, the District has since begun leading targeted initiatives to support the behavioral health of their population.
